Special Interest Groups

Everyone who is interested in family history is not necessarily interested in the same subject area or skillset. With that in mind CDGS sponsors three Special Interest Groups. Opportunities for members to delve into their family history in a smaller group setting.

  • Writers' Workshop - led by retired English Professor Paul Lamar. Participants refine how to express their thoughts and research in a written format. There is a $35 surcharge for participation in this group.
  • French/French Canadian Research - This is a newly forming group who will share sources, tips, tricks, etc. to improve reseach of their French or French Canadian ancestors. There is no charge for paricipation in this group.
  • Jewish Genealogy - This is a newly forming group who will focus on finding those elusive Jewish ancestors. There may also be opportunities to volunteer in Jewish Cemetery clean up. There is no charge for participation in this group.

If you are interested in any of these groups email contactcdgs@cdgsny.org

Exciting news!!!

Our June and July meetings will be in-person at the Clifton Park Halfmoon Public Library. They won't be exactly like the old meetings but pretty close. We will meet in a large (holds 110 people) room. There will be conversation, a book table, refreshments, etc. At 1 we will watch that month's presentation on a large screen at the front of the room. It will still be a live stream Zoom presentation. People in the room will have the chance to ask questions which will be read to the speaker. The library is beautiful, well-lit, plenty of parking, It is handicapped accessible. We will be on the second floor, but there is an elevator as well as stairs. The library recently became a Family Search Affiliate Library. We hope many of you will be able to join us as we would love to meet you face-to-face. If you can't make it you can still watch the presentation on Zoom. We are working out the details, so stay tuned for updates.

Finding New Evidence: Strategies to Improve FAN Club Research

When researching ancestors who lived in earlier time periods or regions with few records, the lack of records can create a brick wall in the research. This necessitates expanding the research to include the cluster of people who associated with the ancestor: immediate and extended family, friends, associates, and neighbors, also known as the ancestor’s FAN Club. Come learn when to use cluster research, who is in the ancestor’s cluster, how to organize the findings, and the steps for successful cluster research.
